New Pros fic - "Wet" - Not that it matters but most of what follows is true
New Pros fic - "Wet"

Just a little trifle, written for the "wet" prompt at[info]teaandswissroll .  It aint much and was written and posted in haste before I bottled out, but after my near melt-down a few days ago, I'm not complaining.  Hope y'all like it.  :D

Beta help was from the awesome[info]byslantedlight  and[info]jojosimco .  Thanks guys, I hope the finished product meets with approval.

Doyle wiped a warm, sticky hand over his face and forehead, closing his eyes briefly against the blazing afternoon sun.   He pulled at the neck of his sweat-covered t-shirt, wincing as the wet cotton peeled away from his skin.  In the distance, a couple lucky enough to have found a table under the shade of a large oak tree laughed and clinked their glasses together.

Beside him, Bodie took a long swig of beer, setting his glass down with a sigh of appreciation and stretching his legs out in front of him.  Doyle plucked at his t-shirt once more, desperate for the feel of cool air against his skin.  Bodie glanced up and smirked, slowly rolling back the sleeves of his immaculate black poloneck.

Doyle glared across at him and drank thirstily from his own beer, ignoring the warmth of the liquid as he swallowed it down.  Typical Bodie.  Un-bloody-flappable, even at 95 degrees and rising.  He ran a hand through his dripping wet hair and let out a long sigh.    Four days of the highest temperatures London had seen for a decade, and Bodie didn’t even break into a sweat.  Doyle scowled as he raised his glass to his dry lips.  Downright unnatural, that’s what it was.

Except there - at Bodie’s temple, just over the crooked eyebrow.  Doyle sucked in a sudden breath. He leaned forward slightly, shifting in his chair to get closer.  There it was - a single bead of sweat, a tiny glistening drop of moisture shining on Bodie’s skin.

Doyle swallowed, his throat painfully dry in the humid air.  He watched as Bodie took another long swig of beer, tilting his head back as he drank it down.  Doyle licked his lips unconsciously as the tiny bead of sweat began to move, tracing its way slowly down Bodie’s face.

Without thought Doyle lifted his hand, reaching out to stop it on its path, wanting to catch the traitorous drop of water on his finger, to touch that too-cool, smooth face.  His fingertips had nearly brushed against the pale cheekbone, were just a fraction of an inch away from their destination when with a jerk, Bodie suddenly turned his head.  Doyle snatched his hand away, suddenly appalled as Bodie raised a single eyebrow in acknowledgement of the outstretched fingers that had been hovering so close to his skin.

Doyle waited, his hand frozen in mid air between them.  Slowly, Bodie reached up and wiped the drop of moisture away from his face, his eyes not breaking contact with Doyle’s.  He swallowed again as Bodie opened his mouth to speak, eyes wide and mouth turned up in an almost-smile.   Then, in the distance, the woman in the shade snorted and laughed, a shrill sound that cut through the silence of the motionless air. Bodie closed his mouth and blinked once.  He shoved his empty glass across the table towards Doyle.  “Your round, mate.”

Doyle let his frozen hand drop to his side.  He stood up, fumbling in his jeans pocket for his wallet, trying to ignore the sound of his heart pounding in his eardrums.  He nodded, turned and walked back towards the pub.

Typical Bodie.  Absolutely un-bloody-flappable.

Very nicely done, but downright frustrating too. So close and yet so far for the boys.

Thank you. :D It is frustrating, isn't it, but I'm pretty sure Doyle will be able to get Bodie into quite a flap if he just keeps trying. :D

ARGH! You can't leave us hanging like this...

Oops, sorry! Well, you know the lads - I'm sure they won't be able to keep their hands off each other for long. :D

Love the image of a single, irresistible drop of perspiration - and how frustrating can you get!!!!!

Thank you. :D Poor Doyle, I do kind of feel bad for him. Or at least I would, if I wasn't quite convinced in my head that it'll all work out in the end.

That's lovely - so detailed and vivid. And maybe we're in for some weather like that, if so, I'll be thinking of Bodie's temple.
foreverfoxcat From: foreverfoxcat Date: 23rd June 2009 05:55 (UTC) (Link)
Lol. Parts of Bodie's anatomy are always worth thinking about, whatever the weather. :D Thanks for the comment, I'm really glad you liked it.

:fingers crossed the good weather, though:

You kept the tension up nicely, even if you did make me want to scream. *g* Good work with this one. Thanks.

Thank you very much. :D Sorry about the screaming thing, but I am going to take that as a compliment. Thanks. :D

You do a really excellent job here of conveying a sense of stifling heat that made me feel warm even while huddled in my air conditioned house, safe against the 95F temperature outside.

You also had me leaning forward in my seat holding my breath, waiting to see if Doyle would really touch him. Hmmm...

Thanks! :D

Thank you very much, I'm really glad you liked it. Thanks for the comments, those are really nice things to say. I did have a bit of a dry spell with fic writing, so I was really glad to have written something and am pleased it seems to work ok.

(pssst - sorry about the word count thingy.)

Oh, you're over your writer's block and wrote something! And it's all kinds of fabulous!

I love, love, love this. All the attention to detail, the timing and placement of the woman's laugh, the trickle of sweat (I swear I can just about feel it, and this has nothing to do with my reading this in the tropics). And how Doyle and Bodie here are just so Doyle and Bodie.

Cheers hon!
foreverfoxcat From: foreverfoxcat Date: 23rd June 2009 06:02 (UTC) (Link)
Aw, thank you so much. And yay for both of us getting over the writer's block thing, that was just awful. :high five:

Thanks ever so much for your comments, you've said such nice things, thank you. I'm ever so glad you liked it.

And for your help and sympathy and encouragement you definitely deserve a cup of the finest tea served in the best bone china. Come round and pick it up any time. :D

Sorry last time I promise, LJ keeps playing up and posting before I have edited my comment properly and put my spelling right.

Really enjoyed this and am so glad that you decided to post it. The tension is palpable and the images are vivid and compelling. This just worked wonderfully and felt just right for Bodie and Doyle, thank you ♥.

Thank you ever so much, I'm really pleased you liked it. And thank you for your comments, it's so nice to hear that you thought it all worked well for you. For such a little ficlet, it was quite a big deal for me to write and post after a 6 month dry spell, so thank you very much. :D

I was holding my breath waiting for Doyle to actually touch Bodie, then that stupid woman disturbed him, and all was lost. :-(

You are not going to leave it there, are you?!!
foreverfoxcat From: foreverfoxcat Date: 23rd June 2009 06:07 (UTC) (Link)
Lol, curse that woman in the background. She obviously doesn't appreciate a good bit of slash when she sees it in the making! Ah well, in my little world I'm pretty sure Doyle will get to touch any part of Bodie he wants to before the summer's out. :D
callistosh65 From: callistosh65 Date: 23rd June 2009 09:07 (UTC) (Link)
So well done.. I could feel the heat, the temptaion of that single drop of sweat, that amazig moment when Doyle gets 'caught'. You created a terrific atmosphere here.

And the last line is brilliant!!

Thank you ever so much, that's really lovely of you to say. I'm so pleased you liked it. For me, it's been so nice to write something again and to remember why I love it so much, and also to remember that fic writing is actually fun and that I can still do it. These nice comments of yours are the icing on the cake, thank you. :D

I hate the heat, especially the London heat, so I envied Bodie's coolness in more ways than one!

I enjoyed this very much and loved the attention you gave to details which helped to place me right *there* in the story, feeling the heat, feeling Doyle's tension (caused by all kinds of things) and seeing Bodie's amusement.

Thanks for this!

London heat is horrible, isn't it? And wouldn't it be lovely to be as cool as Bodie, even in the middle of a London heatwave? :D Thank you ever so much for your comments, I'm really chuffed you felt you could be right there in the story, that's a really lovely compliment. I'm really glad you liked it, thank you. :D

Wow, that was very imaginative and thrilling. That one tiny little bead of sweat had me hooked just as much as it had Doyle. It's the small things after all that make life a happy place, right? Loved every bid of it - thank you for writing!
foreverfoxcat From: foreverfoxcat Date: 23rd June 2009 16:50 (UTC) (Link)
Thank you ever so much, I'm so glad the little bead of sweat had you hooked. :D For some reason, it was a very strong image that jumped into my head when I saw the "wet" prompt. Thank you very much for your comment, I'm really pleased you liked it. :D
norfolkdumpling From: norfolkdumpling Date: 23rd June 2009 16:39 (UTC) (Link)
Ooh - you had me all tensed up there waiting for Doyle's hand to connect..and then, whoosh, it's gone!

I really enjoyed this - and I totally sympathise with Doyle; both over wanting to stroke Bodie's face (well, duh) and hating him for being so cool in a heatwave. I am one of those people who would be griping and sweating and flopping about in the heat, and people like Mr Unflappable make it much worse - good job he's so pretty. *g*

Thanks very much for a really entertaining and rather hot and sultry (and I'm not talking about the weather) read. :)
foreverfoxcat From: foreverfoxcat Date: 23rd June 2009 16:58 (UTC) (Link)
Lol, it is a good job he's pretty, isn't it? Helps him get away with a number of infuriating character traits, especially in fanfic. I'm a flapper as well, myself, I hate being all hot and bothered in the sunshine, so I kind of know how Doyle feels in this one. Thank you ever so much for your comment, I'm glad I was able to suck you in with the not-quite-face-touching. :D
przed From: przed Date: 25th June 2009 02:41 (UTC) (Link)
This is really lovely! You've really nailed the details of the day, and Doyle, and I love that Bodie is un-bloody-flappable till the very end. (I'd also love to see Doyle break the unflappability. *g*)
foreverfoxcat From: foreverfoxcat Date: 25th June 2009 06:01 (UTC) (Link)
Thank you very much. :D Well, the thought of a hot and sweaty Doyle with his t-shirt clinging to his chest certainly gets me all a-flap, so I'm pretty sure Bodie isn't impervious, either. He just hides it well. :D Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.
